Pickup trucks are workhorses. They are driven around more than SUVs and sedans and used for everything including work, moving, towing, and rugged image. As a result, accessories play a huge role in the performance and resale values of these trucks. There are literally thousands of pickup truck accessories available in the market today. So, which are the truck accessories that will better the performance of your truck and also boost the future resale value?

1. Spray-in bed liner
While pickup truck beds are meant to haul everything from plywood to dirt, you don’t want to end up with dings, dents, and scratches. Bed liners help defend the metal bed of the truck from damage while providing a skid-resistant surface, helping keep the cargo from sliding around. Spray-in bed liners are better since they not only protect the bed from rust but also offer better traction. This doesn’t allow debris, water, or dirt to collect beneath. 2. Running boards
Sometimes, the distance between the ground and the cab itself can be a lot. Running boards make it easier to haul gear. However, there are more do’s and don’ts when it comes to running boards. First, one needs to be careful about where exactly they attach on the vehicle. Those that attach to the frame are the strongest and those that attach underneath are the weakest. Chrome running boards are a no-no as the salt spray in the winter peels off the metallic finish. The best (and the most expensive) are the articulating running boards which extend out from underneath the vehicle when the door is opened and they cost around $1,500.

3. Tonneau cover
While the open space on the bed is great, it is also exposed to many elements which can cause it to wear over time. Good tonneau covers are great watertight shields that protect items on the bed. Get foldable aluminum ones, as it is more secure and allows for easier loading on to the truck bed. Also, one needs to note that roll-away versions could be expensive, but can be closed, opened, and unlocked via key fobs. For instance, one for a Chevy Silverado would cost around $575.

4. Locking toolbox
If you’re a pickup truck driver, you know the intense requirement of having tools and other essential items in an accessible and secure place. Toolboxes/lockboxes not only fit in the bed and across the back of the cab, but there are a few which can even move on the tracks, in the direction of the tailgate for easy access when one is working. Diamond plate material is the best, as it gives more traction. Also, pickup truck owners need to note that locks are extremely important as original locks could be flimsy. Aftermarket options, including newer ones, which can be unlocked using smartphone apps, are better albeit expensive. These are available and could cost anywhere between $800 and $1300.
